Originating in Asia, the technique of Xylographie became popular in Europe in the 15th century.

Xylographie is a relief printmaking technique whereby an artist carves out an image/pattern onto the surface of a block of wood. The surface of the woodblock is covered in ink and pressed onto the paper with a new block being used for each different colour.
