ERIN ADAMS

Erin Adams is an Australian scent designer and olfactory artist whose practice explores the relationship between scent, memory, and artistic experience. Through her studio, Smell Art, she combines her interests in art and science to create immersive scent based works that encourage deeper engagement with the often overlooked sense of smell.

Her interest in olfactory art began in 2007 after experiencing scent used within a live performance in Melbourne. While later living in Berlin, she began creating scent designs for concerts and performances, developing her practice within the city’s experimental scent community. Since then, she has continued to expand her work through independent research, workshops, exhibitions, and ongoing study of olfactory science and scent design. Her practice is influenced by the Institute for Art and Olfaction in Los Angeles and its open source approach to scent culture.

For The Rose in Art: From Aphrodite to Barbie exhibition at Carrick Hill, Erin created Stop and Smell the Roses, an immersive installation featuring six rare rose absolutes sourced from around the world. Each fragrance is housed within a handmade origami vessel designed by origami master Philip Shen and crafted from sustainably produced Nepalese Lokta paper. Together, the works celebrate the rich sensory and cultural significance of the rose while inviting visitors to rediscover the art of smelling.
